If you are returning to work after a long absence, you need to prepare yourself for your re-entry into the workplace. This is the time to do some self-inventory, to reassess your job skills and to polish off the areas where you are a little rusty.
1. Update your skills – Have you updated your skills? Are you familiar with new computer operating systems and programs? Have you used the latest version of Microsoft Office?
2. Update your resume – Have you updated your resume to show that you left your previous employer? Be prepared to discuss how and why you left.
3. Schedule – Will your current schedule allow you to do the job that you are looking for if hired? This is the time to consider your babysitter needs, family time, length of commute, etc.
4. Salary – Are you willing to take a lower salary? You may be forced to take a lower salary and have to work your way up or secure a better paying job when the opportunity arises.
5. Expand your network? – Expand your network of professional contacts. Sign up for social networking sites such as Linked-In, VeeJobs, and Facebook. Reach out to as many people as possible.
